Today I passed my Graduate Certificate of OHS Management with Curtin Uni. I have thoroughly enjoyed studying the Grad Cert this last 12 months. The subjects have been so varied and interested, the four I have completed covered: Accident Prevention, Risk Management & Safety Technology, OHS Economics and Injury & Return to Work.
Whilst I have enjoyed studying it definitely wasn’t easy, with a workload of approximately 15-20 hours of study per week, along with my 40-45 hours a week at Harris Scarfe. I did like the idea of being able to complete this on my own, and I didn’t really have a lot of choice in that anyway! Whilst Harris Scarfe said support was available the 45 hours a week had to go somewhere, except for one day off to finish an assignment and another day working from home to concentrate better I’ve been on my own. And whilst the government is picking up the bill at the moment come July 1st they are going to want a reasonable sum back, there goes 8k of this years salary.
I am happy with what I have achieved and it would be easy to stop there I need to get my Graduate Diploma. It will mean another year of study, stressful nights and long weekends typing assignments, I’ll find a way. Once I have completed the Graduate Diploma I will be recognized as a qualified professional in my field and will be able to become a chartered member of the SIA, if they will have me.
Next years subjects: Occupational Disease, OHS & IR Law, Ergonomics and Occupational Hygiene.
